Weekend Roundup 30/09/2024 – 06/10/2024

It was a bumper weekend of racing in Bristol and the South West with 3 local races, and teams traveling to compete elsewhere.

Bristol and West AC headed to Birmingham with eyes on a National Road Relays title. Having taken the men’s National Cross Country title a few weeks before, they lined up amongst the favourites. On the men’s side Leeds City retained their crown, whilst Bristol and West finished 6th. The women meanwhile finished in 20th behind eventual winners Herne Hill Harriers.

Meanwhile, 427 runners were heading under the finishing banner in Bath having run the 26.2 miles from Bristol in the Bristol to Bath Marathon. A monumentus feat for all involved over gruelling rural landscape, won by Ewan Lindsay in 3:24, and Amy Boalch in 3:29.

On Sunday, attention turned to Cardiff where the annual half marathon took place. Athletes from all over the world headed to the Welsh Capital to tackle 13.1 miles. Kenyan athletes took the win in both the Men’s and Women’s races with Patrick Moising crossing the line in 1:00:01 whilst Miriam Chebet ran 1:06:42 to take the women’s crown.

Other REsults

The Lisbon Marathon saw Kenyan domination. The men’s race was won by Wisley Kimeli in 2:08:33 with eight of the top ten finishers being Kenyan. Rael Kinyara Nguriatukel won the women’s race in 2:27:11 with the top 5 women all from Kenya.

Lisbon also staged a Half Marathon with Faith Chepchirchir Kiprotich (Kenya) running a strong 1:10:33 to win the women’s race and Mosinet Geremew (Ethiopia) taking the men’s victory in 1:03:09.

The Chester Marathon was won by Marshall Smith (Ashford AC) in 2:16:59 followed by Joshua Griffiths (Swansea Harriers) in 2:18:06. Peter Le Grice of Bristol & West had a strong run to finish third in 2:18:31. Naomi Mitchell (Reading AC) took the victory in the women’s race with Lianne Milner (Cheshire Dragons) and Alice Johnston (Les Croupiers) rounding out the podium. The Metric Marathon (26.2km) was won by Michael Young (West Cheshire Athletic Club) and Tracy Rogers (Buckley RC) in 1:29:36 and 1:41:55.

The AJ Bell Great Scottish Run saw the return of Callum Hawkins (Kilbarchan AAC) who won the half marathon in 1:03:25 followed home by Tewelde Menges (Medway & Maidstone AC) and Andrew Heyes (Hallamshire Harriers Sheffield). Natasha Phillips (Dundee Hawkhill Harriers) won the women’s race with Nynke Mulholland-Stummer (Inverclyde AC) and Brogan Wallace (Shettleston Harriers) rounding out the podium. Jamie Burns (Shettleston Harriers) ran a sub-30 minute clocking to win the men’s 10k in 29:55 with Kirsty Walker (Edinburgh AC) winning the women’s race in 33:55.

There was a competitive race in the Kingston Half Marathon with Ugur Altan (Belgrave Harriers) just edging out Colin Norris (Unattached) to win in 1:08:14. Phoebe Law (Kingston AC & Poly Harriers) dominated the women’s race to win in 1:16:56.

Omar Ahmed (Birchfield Harriers) ran away from the field to win the Jarrow 10k in 29:15 with Kirsty Longley (Liverpool Pembroke Sefton) winning the women’s race in 35:03.

Lots of the cross country leagues kicked off this weekend including the North Wales League, Wessex League Essex League, West Yorkshire League, and North Yorkshire & South Durham League. Closer to home the Gwent League and Gloucestershire League are starting this coming weekend.

Up in Scotland it was the district cross country relays. Olympic 1500m finalists Laura Muir (2016, 2021, 2024) and Lynee MacDougall (1984) were both spectators at the West District Championships where Cambuslang claimed victory in the women’s and men’s races. It was a similar story in the East District Championships with Central taking the men’s and women’s titles. The Highland Hill Runners won the women’s North District Championships with Inverness Harries AAC taking the victory in the men’s race.
