Weston Prom Series 2/9 5 Mile Race Review

, ,

On Thursday I raced the second race of nine 5 mile races in the Dave Jones Prom Run Series organised by Weston Athletic Club. These are flat, quick road races along the prom of the Weston-Super-Mare seafront. Kinisi Run Hub are excited to be sponsoring this great series.

With it being the seafront you never know what the weather is going to be like and it is always going to be windy. It was fairly calm but there was still a noticeable bit of wind. The temperature was very mild though and on the whole it was very pleasant race conditions.

The course is two laps out-and-back. We were able to cruise on the out part of the laps due to a nice tailwind but that meant the back part of the laps was into a headwind which always makes finishing tough.

There was a strong group of runners at the front of this month’s race with the top-3 all dipping inside 26 minutes. I was part of a group of about 4 runners for the first lap including Alastair Matheson, David Awde and Adam Tango Holland before it started stringing out on the second lap. Ali and myself started to break away from the rest of the field but as we got towards the last turnaround point, Ali pulled away from me to gain a small lead which he held until the finish. I managed to hold on to second place.

The men’s podium was Alastair Matheson (Bristol & West AC) in 25:36, Jamie Williamson (Springburn Harriers) in 25:43 and David Awde (Bristol & West AC) in 25:59. Chelsea Baker (Bristol & West AC) won the women’s race in 29:18 followed home by Amy Hammersley (Bristol & West AC) in 30:25 and Penny Guess (Southville RC) in 30:39. In total there were 276 finishers. Full results here.

The race starts and finishes just outside Revo Kitchen on the seafront where registration and the presentation also take place, Many runners take advantage of this and get a well deserved post-race drink and meal in the restaurant. The prom remains open during the race but there are plenty of marshals on the course to ensure any pedestrians and cyclists are aware of oncoming runners.

Well done to everyone who raced and thank you to Weston AC for organising another great Prom Run! Kinisi Run Hub are proud to be supporting such a great event and I can’t wait for the next one in November!
