On Sunday I took part in the 44th edition of the Frenchay 10k in North Bristol. This event was established in 1980 and is one of the oldest 10k races in the UK. It's rich history and deep connection to the local area has made it a beloved tradition for many dedicated participants and supporters. The event brings together seasoned athletes and first-time runners to unite their support for local causes with all profits being donated to local charities. This was my first time running the race but I thought it was well organised and a really enjoyable community event.

The race HQ was located in the Students' Centre at the UWE Campus which is an ideal location as it is easily accessible with ample parking and plenty of facilities on site. The start was on the road outside the centre so you couldn't miss it and it was even considerately marked with suggested starting areas depending on your predicted time to ensure minimal congestion as the race gets underway. The race is chip timed so there is no need to start further ahead than you need to as you will get an accurate time.

The race got underway promptly at 11am and started with a loop around the beautiful UWE grounds before heading out and down Blackberry Hill. It felt great running down the hill but in the back of my mind I was conscious that we would have to run back up to finish. But that was a problem for later. At the bottom of the hill we entered Snuff Mills park making our way along the River Frome. The park is open to the public during the event and because it was such a nice morning there were lots of people out walking. Most were very respectful of the race taking place and moved out the way but I did have to dodge a few dogs off leads! After a stretch along the footpath by the river we looped up the first of three significant hills and did a loop around the Oldbury Court park. Then it was out onto the roads of Fishponds.

There is a stretch along Gill Avenue and down Frenchay Road before crossing a bridge across the River Frome and starting the second hill up to Frenchay Common. Next there is a nice stretch along Frenchay Park Road which really allowed you to get into a good rhythm and make up some time. There's a nice downhill section descending Broom Hill before having to take on the final climb up Blackberry Hill and then back into the UWE grounds to the finish.

I took the win in 32:38 which was a new course record and a real confidence boost ahead of the Bristol half marathon in a few weeks time. Lee Gawler (Bristol & West AC) finished second in 35:07 followed home by Warren Newton (Unattached) in third in 35:17. The women's race was won by Caroline Nicholas (Yate & Sodbury Striders) in 40:29 with Holly Chipman (Silverdale RC) taking second in 40:45 and Ellie Armstrong (Unattached) third in 42:27. In total there were 582 finishers. Every finisher was rewarded with a popular, sought-after commemorative mug. Full results here.

Well done to everyone who raced and thank you to the Frenchay 10k team for organising a great event!
